The Grid Code Specifications for Demand Connections define the technical conditions that must be met for electrical equipment to be connected to the Finnish power grid. Fingrid sets these requirements based on the European Network Codes to ensure grid reliability, security, and equal operating conditions. In data center projects, compliance with the Grid Code is a critical part of the grid connection process.
The current Grid Code 2018 requirements apply to all projects where binding equipment contracts have been signed after 7 September 2018. They specify in detail what must be submitted and how compliance is demonstrated. We ensure that design, testing, and documentation meet these requirements, enabling a smooth and approved grid connection process.
Upcoming Changes (Grid Code 2026)
Fingrid is updating the technical requirements for demand connections, with the new Grid Code 2026 to be published for comments during 2025. The update aims to further harmonize and clarify connection conditions. We closely monitor these developments and ensure that upcoming requirements are taken into account early in the client’s project.
The Grid Code process requires submitting comprehensive connection data to Fingrid, including information on 110 kV substations, transmission lines, transformers, compensation equipment, and operational characteristics. Fingrid may also require simulation models for plants with large converters or arc furnaces. We prepare the necessary calculations, models, and documentation to ensure full compliance.
Demonstrating compliance involves equipment testing and simulation. This includes protection and relay testing, disturbance simulations, and frequency and voltage response tests. When required, advanced simulations using PSCAD or PSS/E are performed. We plan and coordinate the testing process and ensure that all results are properly documented and reported.
By outsourcing the Grid Code process, clients gain certainty that all requirements are met correctly and on schedule. We are familiar with Fingrid’s procedures and regulatory updates from Grid Code 2018 to the upcoming Grid Code 2026, combining technical expertise with strong project management to minimize the risk of delays or rejections in the grid connection process.
