Despro supporting the Kemijärvi battery energy storage project as Owner’s Engineer

In Northern Finland, a major energy infrastructure project is in progress in Kemijärvi – the Leviäkumpu battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 30 MW / 60 MWh. Once completed, the project will strengthen the stability, flexibility and security of supply of Finland’s national power system.
The Kemijärvi BESS project is scheduled for completion in summer 2026, at which point the storage system will begin its operation in the electricity markets. The project is jointly owned by UB Renewable Energy Fund and AmpTank Finland. The battery technology is supplied by Sungrow and the main contractor is NYAB. Construction works started in Kemijärvi in summer 2025 and have progressed efficiently. Earthworks and foundations for both the storage systems and the substation have been completed, and the next phase will focus on equipment installations and cabling at the 110 kV switchyard. The storage system will be directly connected to Fingrid’s Kellarijänkä substation.

In addition, we are responsible for safety coordination and site supervision throughout each phase of construction.
