We identify potential locations that ensure secure electricity supply, sufficient energy availability, safety, proximity to other infrastructure, and good logistical connections. A data center can be built using prefabricated structures and placed either in an existing building or in a newly constructed facility. On behalf of the client, we also handle permitting by preparing and submitting building and action permit applications and managing negotiations with municipalities and cities.
We identify suitable sites for a data center, both for new builds (greenfield) and for utilizing existing properties (brownfield). The assessment covers reliability of electricity supply, sufficient capacity, availability of telecommunications connections, and logistical access. We also evaluate safety, proximity to infrastructure, zoning considerations, and permit requirements. The client receives a comprehensive overview of potential sites and their readiness for data center development.
We conduct preliminary studies required for a data center’s grid connection and assess different options for implementation. This includes mapping the connection possibilities with national and local grid operators, defining the appropriate voltage level, and analyzing the technical conditions of the connection point. We also evaluate capacity needs, connection reliability, and potential reinforcement requirements in the grid.
We carry out preliminary studies on the external network connections a data center requires. This includes mapping available operators and connection routes, assessing redundancy options, and ensuring that connections are secure with minimal latency. Both national and international connections are considered, and we review different technologies such as fiber-optic and backbone network solutions. As a result, the client receives clear documentation on available WAN connections, their technical requirements, and the measures needed to implement them.
Grid connections in data center projects – webinar recording
How can a data center project improve its chances of securing a grid connection when numerous projects are competing for limited capacity?
In this webinar recording, Onni Härmä, Business Unit Manager at Despro, explains what determines grid capacity and how project maturity, credibility, and development speed affect the chances of securing a grid connection agreement. You will gain an up-to-date overview of Finland’s grid capacity, upcoming investments, and the typical pitfalls encountered in data center projects.
The webinar also covers Fingrid’s project maturity criteria and the key stages of planning, permitting, and implementing a grid connection. Order the recording to learn how to address the grid connection early, identify project risks, and help your data center project stand out.
